FAQ

The quick answers. Everything here is also asked and answered by the in-game field guide (F1) and the helper bots.

What is Mages & Materia?

An MMORPG-style builder action RPG in private pre-alpha — an online sandbox built on metroidvania bones. Three persistent continents on one server, five classes, five schools of magic, and full mining and building across ten depth layers. One person builds it, in Godot. The Realm page has the long version.

How do I get access?

Apply on the application page. I read every application; if it is approved, you get an invite link at the contact you left -- whether you applied as a player, a tester, or a builder. The link registers your account, and that is the whole setup.

Is it free?

Free while it is in testing. Long-term it will be a commercial title, and I have not decided the model yet (buy-to-play, free-to-play). People who help now are first in line if paid builder or GM roles ever exist -- that is an intention, not a promise. Either way, being here now means you helped build it.

What do I need to run it?

A Windows or Linux PC (Mac and Mobile builds coming soon) -- the game is 2.5D and runs on modest hardware. The launcher is the only download (about 400 MB of game data); it fetches updates and signs you in.

Can I play solo?

The game is online-only -- there is one shared server -- but nothing forces you into a party. Plenty of it is a fine solitary time: mining, building, taming a familiar, watching the herds move at dusk. The world just carries on around you.

Will my stuff survive?

Day to day, yes: every edit is journaled and survives restarts -- your tower is still your tower, and land claims keep other people's shovels out of it. But this is pre-alpha, so things will break, wipe, and change under your feet. When a wipe has to happen, it happens. As we get closer to full releases we will halt all wipes on the Live server.

Where do I get help in-game?

Press F1 anywhere for the field guide: building, combat and crafting. Or whisper auspex, tess or bram in chat and just ask -- the server's helper bots answer questions.
